Casual Labourer

We are recruiting for a part-time Labourer to join the Solid Waste team at the Waste Management Centre in Georgefield, NS for a 7-month term.

The Solid Waste division of the Municipality of East Hants is responsible for managing and supporting the reduction, diversion and processing of solid waste within the East Hants Municipal boundaries. The Waste Management Centre, located in Georgefield NS, provides services such as a residential household hazardous waste depot, scrap metal, tire, wood and brush drop-offs, and includes two transfer stations  for recycling & garbage and compost as well as a construction debris landfill site. Solid waste staff take a team approach in managing incoming materials to ensure environmental protection to the community.

Labourer’s support the team by communicating with and educating residents on proper sorting practices, scanning for and removing misplaced materials, packing materials for transfer such as electronics, lights, paints, etc., picking up litter on site as well as shovelling snow from walkways.

What you can offer:

  • Highschool diploma, or equivalent
  • Top notch customer service and communication skills with a genuine interest in supporting the community
  • Interest and ability to perform general labour duties (i.e. shovelling, sweeping and lifting up to 70 lbs)
  • Demonstrated understanding of safe work best practices
  • An aptitude for contributing to and supporting a collaborative, welcoming and accessible environment for all staff and visitors
  • Ability to work 2 Saturdays per month (7:45am-2:15pm)
  • Prior experience in solid waste handling would be an asset
  • Experience operating and working around heavy equipment, an asset
  • Ability work in various weather conditions and around loud noises, foul odours, and garbage or waste materials.
  • Clean criminal records check
  • A valid driver’s license and clean drivers abstract

Term ending March 31, 2024

Hours: 16-32 hours per week (2-3 weekday shifts, plus 2 Saturdays per month)

Hourly Rate: 20.53 per hour
