February 23, 2023

The Municipality of East Hants has acquired the former Dominion Atlantic Railway (DAR) Line lands from Maitland to Stanley.

Property owners adjacent to the acquired lands will receive information in the mail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did the Municipality Acquire the Lands?

The land acquisition was done through warranty deed, which is a legal real estate document that protects the buyer and ensures the seller holds clear title to the property.

What if I have license, lease, or easement agreement with the previous landowner?

All existing agreements that are registered with the Land Registry Office transferred with the ownership. Any agreements that were not registered with the Land Registry Office did not carry with title. If you believe you have a registered agreement, please contact the Municipality to confirm.

What is the current status of the land?

The lands formerly known as the Dominion Atlantic Railway (DAR) are now owned by the Municipality of East Hants.

Is this an active trail system?

This is not considered an active trail system at this time.

What are the future plans/next steps for the former DAR line?

The Municipality will assess the lands and develop long-term plans for both operations and capital projects. Signage will be installed at entrances and exits of the former DAR line lands, as well as at the various water crossings when weather conditions permit.
