Shubenacadie Wastewater Treatment Plant: Growth and Sustainability for East Hants
The Government of Canada, Province of Nova Scotia and Municipality of East Hants proudly celebrated the grand opening of the new Shubenacadie Wastewater Treatment plant on August 27, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the community’s growth and development.
The new facility was made possible through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) and is the result of collaborative efforts between three levels of government, environmental and construction consultants and community stakeholders.
MP Kody Blois, Member of Parliament for Kings-Hants on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable John A. MacDonald, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Hants East and Eleanor Roulston, Warden of the Municipality of East Hants, provided remarks about the state-of-the-art wastewater facility that will provide accessible and sustainable services to the community of Shubenacadie for years to come. Funding of the project includes a federal portion of $1,920,000, provincial funding of $1,599,840 and a total budget of $9,540,000.
“Investing in improved wastewater facilities is an important part of delivering on our governments priority to build vibrant and sustainable communities,” says MP Kody Blois. “The Shubenacadie wastewater facility will allow for further development in the area. With projects like this, we are equipping communities with the infrastructure they need for our growing population.”
“Our PC government recognizes the important role this wastewater plant will play here in Shubenacadie,” said MLA John A. MacDonald. “We are excited to see this development, as it will enhance the quality of life for Nova Scotians and contribute to a sustainable future.”
Construction of the facility began in 2022 and has been operational since July 2024. The previous treatment plant was at maximum capacity for several years and required new technology to create capacity for housing and overall community growth. The plant was designed by CBCL Limited and Constructed by L&R Construction Limited. The facility supports the wastewater treatment service for residents, local businesses and a school.
“Today marks a significant milestone for Shubenacadie. This infrastructure is essential for our community’s health and paves the way for future growth and development,” says Warden Eleanor Roulston. “I am proud to see this project, which involved contributions from all levels of government, come to completion for East Hants.”
